BIBLICAL COUNSELING

What is Biblical Counseling?

Life brings challenges—whether in marriage, emotions like anxiety or anger, or overwhelming trials. In these moments, we believe God’s Word provides the wisdom, hope, and guidance we need.

At Grace and Truth Church, our counseling ministry seeks to help individuals apply the life-transforming truths of Scripture as it points to Jesus Christ, the source of eternal satisfaction and peace.

Counseling is offered free of charge with one request: that participants actively sit under the preaching and teaching ministry of Grace and Truth Church during their time of counseling.

WHY BIBLICAL COUNSELING?

Today people are more willing to seek help for their problems than ever before. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 25% of U.S. adults received some form of counseling in the past year. People are looking for help, whether due to broken relationships, personal struggles and sins, difficult seasons of life, or dealing with past hurts.Biblical counseling puts the Bible at the center of identifying the problem and pursuing solutions.

The Bible provides light necessary to understand our problems as God intends for us to understand them. 2 Peter 1:19 says that we should pay attention to the Scriptures because they are like a lamp shining in a dark place. Who can understand the workings of our soul but God who made our soul? Who can understand the pressures of living in a fallen world better than the God who made the world and is still present in it? Who can provide the insights to how we change, grow, and glorify God with our lives but the God who sent His Son to forgive us of our sins and give us a new life in Him?

The soul is dark and mysterious. Often times the world around us feels dark and mysterious. Other counseling approaches grasp at how to make sense of it all. But biblical counseling rests on the Word of God which has real and trustworthy answers. The same God who made you and made the world around you has spoken light into these dark places.

The Bible also provides the Life necessary for us to live in a way that pleases Him and gives lasting joy. Jesus said in John 6:35 that He is the Bread of Life, whoever comes to Him will not hunger or thirst. Jesus is true Life. What do you thirst for? What are you hungering for? What are the deep desires that motivate what you think, what you feel, what you do? Jesus called Himself the Bread of Life because He is the only One who can truly sustain and satisfy our souls. And our souls will be restless until they find their rest in Him. Not only does Jesus take away our sins, He is also the solution to all the struggles and problems of life. And what is more, He has given His Holy Spirit to work in the lives of His people to produce real, lasting change. The Bible is the means by which we know Jesus as true Life and apply the implications of His gospel in our lives.

Why biblical counseling? Because biblical counseling provides true understanding about who we are and how we should understand our problems. The God who made us and the world has spoken, and His word gives light to illumine the dark places of our lives. The places of our lives that we have so many questions about.

Why biblical counseling? Because biblical counseling rests on the power of risen Savior, Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can forgive our sins and bring real lasting change to our lives. That change happens through the life changing power of the Gospel, which is the power of God.

We counsel with the Bible because we believe it is:

  • Without error — fully trustworthy in everything it teaches.

  • Sufficient — able to address the real challenges of life.

Many people respect the Bible but are unaware of its power to transform hearts and lives. At the center of Scripture is the good news of Jesus Christ—the solution to humanity’s greatest problem: separation from God.

From this truth flows hope and help for every area of life—our relationships, our emotions, and our struggles. This makes Biblical Counseling distinct from all other forms of counseling.

FAQs

  • The average counseling session is between 60 and 90 minutes. A session may be longer or shorter depending on what is going on in the counseling process. First sessions may be slightly longer as the counselor seeks to better understand who you are and what is going on.

  • It depends on the type of problem being addressed. Counseling can last for 5-6 weeks, or span several months.

In biblical counseling we’re careful not to create dependence on the counselor. We want to bear each other’s burdens, while at the same time we desire each person to stand on their own, in Christ. This happens as we mature and grow in our ability to understand the problem biblically and apply the Bible’s solutions.

  • The application provides necessary information to help your counselor prepare for counseling. Having this information will make the first session more productive.

  • No. We offer our counseling services free of charge. In some cases, you may be asked to purchase books for your own study. But we try our best to avoid this by using resources the church can supply.

  • No. Due to the wide range of child ages and the timing of counseling appointments, we cannot provide childcare.

  • All of our counselors are trained in biblical counseling. They also serve our counseling ministry under the supervision of our elders. Please be assured that everyone who does counseling at Grace and Truth is equipped to do so and is actively receiving the support necessary to best serve you. Because of this and the number of counseling requests we receive, you may not select the counselors they see.

  • Homework is crucial to the counseling process. The counseling session is once a week and provides important truths and biblical principles necessary. By doing the homework you actively apply what you learned in session to your life. Faithful completion of homework is crucial for success in biblical counseling.

  • If you need to cancel a session, then please coordinate directly with your assigned counselor.

  • We do provide our counseling services to non-members of Grace and Truth. This is subject to counselor availability. We also require that non-members attend our worship service on Sundays. This is to ensure that the message heard on Sunday is consistent with the teaching provided in the counseling sessions.

  • Biblical counseling rests on the sufficiency of the Bible to instruct us in all matters of life and godliness. Christian counseling on the other hand integrates secular ideas and value into the counseling process.

This is dangerous because secular techniques often contradict the Bible or arise from a view of the world that is opposed the biblical teaching.
